PENTICTON & WINE COUNTRY TOURISM SPORT MARKETING COORDINATOR (CONTRACT)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Penticton & Wine Country Tourism recently completed a five-year sport tourism plan in conjunction with the Community Sport Tourism Development Program through Tourism BC and 2010 Legacies Now. The plan was developed by working with local sport organizations and stakeholders in order to identify opportunities and priorities for sport tourism in Penticton. It also sets out objectives, strategies and tactics for taking advantage of these key opportunities.

Through a coordinated approach with sport organizations, local governments and the tourism industry, the Sport Marketing Coordinator will assist in developing, attracting, and staging sport tourism events, working within Penticton & Wine Country Tourism’s overall Destination Marketing Strategy. The Sport Marketing Coordinator will report to the Marketing Manager, Penticton & Wine Country Tourism.

Therefore, Penticton & Wine Country Tourism is seeking an experienced, well-qualified sport tourism professional, ideally with both sport and tourism experience.

Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Build/maintain positive relationships with event rights holders.
  2. Implement a simple system for local sport organizations to use to approach accommodation properties for commissions for sporting events.
  3. Build and research the list of potential sporting events for which Penticton can bid, beginning with the events identified by the working group as areas of opportunity.
  4. Support the preparation of bids for selected sporting events.
  5. After winning a bid, assist the event organizers with the business aspects of planning the event.
  6. Assist event organizers in maximizing the tourism benefits of the planned sporting events.
  7. Work with other Okanagan communities to identify joint sport event hosting opportunities.
  8. Build a list of key influencers in the Penticton sport tourism community.
  9. Implement ongoing communication and relationship building for local sport organizations, municipal council and staff, Penticton School Board, tourism businesses, and key influencers related to sport tourism.
  10. Meet with the City of Penticton, Regional District and Ministry of Highways to review requirements for infrastructure and other improvements related to priority sport tourism opportunities.
  11. Develop and implement event hosting seminars for local sport organizations.
  12. Track organization capacity of Penticton’s sport clubs.
