Penticton is “Open For Business” Event

Posted: February 7, 2012

Penticton Economic Development Services in partnership with the Urban Development Institute (UDI) and the City of Penticton will be hosting an “Open for Business” and Development 101 event Wednesday February 8th, 2012 promoting the City of Penticton as a development friendly city.

In 2011, Penticton Economic Development began working with the Okanagan Urban Development Institute (UDI) and the City of Penticton Planning department to establish a Penticton chapter of UDI.  UDI is a national non-profit association (with international affiliations) of the development industry and its related professions that is non-partisan in its activities. UDI represents thousands of individuals involved in all facets of land development and planning, including: developers, property managers, financial lenders, lawyers, engineers, planners, architects, appraisers, real estate professionals, local governments and government agencies.

An educated understanding of the development process is required to fully appreciate the pressures, constraints and complexities of developing a parcel of land and what elements are required to make and keep a project viable. Development 101 is a simple explanation of a development from start to finish and provides a better understanding of the language of development.

As a “Partner in Community Building,” the Urban Development Institute is committed to working with communities and governments to create and achieve the vision of balanced, well-planned and sustainable communities. The Urban Development Institute promotes wise and efficient urban growth, good planning and good development practices, affordable housing and high quality commercial and industrial developments.

The outcomes of this function are to get the development community together with the City to promote development in Penticton.  The end goal is to foster a better working relationship with the development community and City planning and to improve customer services to spur on investment in our community.

“This new partnership will assist our organization with getting our message out to the development community and assist the City of Penticton in developing best practices to support this industry and development opportunities in our Penticton,” said Economic Development Officer David Arsenault.

The City of Penticton will also introduce their new Economic Investment Zones (EIZ) as well.  The EIZ’s are property tax relief on improvements and land as well as building permits fee reductions.  The EIZ program in Penticton gives our community a competitive advantage in the region and that will promote development and employment areas in the City.
