City Features
With many development projects underway, the City of Penticton holds a lot of future potential if it is able to stay on its current diversification track. Once seen primarily as a tourist town, the economy has stabilized in the last several years, as many manufacturing businesses have come to call the city home. Its links to several major highways and a base of 85,000 people within a half hour drive make it a prime location to invest and settle down. Tourism and agriculture will continue to provide the economic base for the region; however, as more manufacturing companies bring jobs to this affordable region we will witness a decrease in average age and an increase in average income of its residents. Watch for strong population growth, which will drive demand for both rentals and home purchases after this current financial turmoil dissipates.
The city has received many accolades recently as an attractive place to start a business and this is exactly what the city needs…. Economic diversity. Penticton’s tourism and agriculture are expected to continue growing. Strong population growth will drive demand for both rentals and home purchases.

$28 Million Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation
Located at the Penticton Campus, Okanagan College’s new Centre of Excellence will significantly enhance both the College and the communities of the South Okanagan and Similkameen. The Centre will open its doors in March 2011 to 500 more students enrolled in expanded and new programs, increasing the opportunities for them to study and stay in the region. The Centre of Excellence, located in the heart of the Penticton campus, is designed to exceed the most rigorous environmental standards and demonstrates the economic viability of sustainable construction techniques.
“The Centre of Excellence will offer students a learning experience in a living lab whereby they will see first hand examples of sustainable and green technologies utilized in the Centre. The achievement of the Living Building Challenge criteria will solidify our commitment to providing a sustainable, healthy environment for the leaders of tomorrow. We will all benefit from the Centre and I encourage everyone to consider being part of this extraordinary opportunity.” Janet Shaw, Chair, Okanagan College Board
Downtown Penticton
Penticton’s downtown core remains active and vibrant. The Downtown Penticton Association represents the 400 shops and services and their offices are located in the heart of Main Street. A full time executive director is guided by an active board of directors that work to promote and enhance the central core of our city.
The Downtown Penticton Association is a central point for collecting and dispersing information to its members. They actively represent their interests throughout the community, keeping their members informed through regular newsletters, meetings, emails and an up-to-date web site. As well as marketing the benefits of downtown Penticton, the association takes an active role in activities that contribute to a healthy, balanced community. The Association focuses on quality events and promotions, customer service, business recruitment, partnerships, parking, beautification and cleanliness, and safety of the downtown core.
Thanks to the Association’s efforts, the city centre area is very pleasant and well-lit. A great variety of products and services are on offer, and the city and privately operated parking lots make access convenient. A business improvement project has made significant developments to the infrastructure, and storefront vacancies are now uncommon. Located just steps from the lakeside, beaches, and casino, the downtown core is a very popular tourist destination.
