Resource Industry
Forestry and mining, the two resource-extraction industries which fuelled BC’s rise to prosperity, remain a crucial component of the regional economy, employing over 4 percent of the local workforce. These industries represent a sound foundation for economic diversification and provide a springboard for value added resource-based service manufacturing industries.
The long-term prospects for the industry is one of cautious optimism, with increased opportunities in expanding new markets, value-added wood products and continued improvement in production facilities. Increased demand and new employment opportunities are expected in silviculture and replanting as well as in new forest related restoration work.
